Church, You Are Worth It

The white fluff of our duvet peeked out from where my toes met the bed as I sat, legs crossed, head bowed, tears streaming down my face.

I have sat in moments of unknown before. I am no stranger to roads that turn rocky or grounds that seem unsafe.

This time is different.

This time, the story is not mine to own.

This time, it is clear from the start that I am a part of a redemption journey that needs my weak and feeble voice to speak out above the noise because this time it’s about God’s Church and that deserves a fighting chance.

There comes a point in the life of a church when you look to the left and right and make a decision about who you are here for.

We are not a building, we are a people, a collective that is valuable in the eyes of the Lord and must be valuable to the people who call this church home.

As we gather together and continue to show up what we are saying is,

‘YOU ARE WORTH IT. Your children are worth it. Your experience with Christ and my part in that is worth it.’ All of it, the mess, the hard, the unknown, the broken, that thing I said, the thing you did, the goodbyes, the old, the new… all of it, You. Are. Worth. It. All.

Together we create a space that is rich in love, full of the light of Christ for our children and that swells with grace and connection for our youth. We cultivate a space of worship, a fertile ground for sound teaching, and welcome circle for community and acceptance. Each of us have a part as unique as the heart we bring to the table. Together we stand at the beginning of the unknown waiting on who is going to decide that we are worth it.

With tears streaming down my face and all the strength I can muster for that night, I ask, ‘Do you think it’s all going to be ok?’ My heart pleading for a confident yes. Instead I got the truth, ‘I don’t know. That’s all up to us and our church.’

I have sat in the unknown before, but this time I am not alone.

Warmly,
